Small Martin Visser BZ29 Sofa for 't Spectrum, 1960
Martin Visser / 't Spectrum / Netherlands
Lovely small settee with black enameled metal frame and outreaching teak armrests. Engineer-designer Martin Visser (1922-2009), who oversaw manufacturing and developed the collections for 't Spectrum, became the company's Head of Design in 1954 and carried the "form follows function" concept into the prosperous Post-War era. Visser created a variety of highly acclaimed furniture pieces - chairs, tables, and more in tubular steel as the prohibition on metal use during the war was repealed giving birth to a whole new esthetic in the process. This sofa, re-upholstered in plum fabric, has a frame in original condition with visible signs of wear.
