Small MARTIN VISSER BZ29 Sofa for 't Spectrum in 1960
Martin Visser / 't Spectrum / Netherlands
Lovely small settee with black enameled metal frame with outreaching teak armrests. Engineer-designer Martin Visser (1922-2009), who oversaw manufacturing and developed the collections for 't Spectrum, became the company's Head of Design in 1954 and carried the "form follows function" concept into the prosperous postwar era. Visser created a variety of highly acclaimed furniture pieces—chairs, tables, and more—in tubular steel as the prohibition on metal use during the war was repealed giving birth to a whole new esthetic in the process. This sofa, re-upholstered in plum fabric, has a frame in original condition with visible signs of wear.
