Mategot Style perforated Umbrella Stand or Waste Bin by Pilastro
Tjerk Reijenga / Pilastro / Netherlands
Vintage, Mid-Century, perforated metal umbrella stand or waste bin. Made by acclaimed Dutch post-war furniture manufacturer Pilastro Pilastro was an Amsterdam company that proudly bore the Good Housing Quality Mark, an award given out by the publication of the Dutch "Good Living" foundation which aimed to raise living standards in the Netherlands by promoting furniture and home goods that met certain aesthetic, technical and social requirements. Pilastro’s main designer Tjerk Reijenga was best known for his minimalist designs in the 1950s and 1960s for the brand, which also counted other famous designers of that time such as Coen de Vries, Friso Kramer and Dirk van Sliedregt on their staff. A recurring theme in Reijenga's work is the fascination with industrial materials such as metal (wire), with which he makes constructions from a minimalist approach with colorful interpretation. This piece is in original condition with visible wear consistent with its age and use and still has a vintage flower sticker on it.
