Set of 4 leather chairs by Mart Stam for Thonet, 1926. These cantilever armchairs have chrome frames and leather arms, backs and seats. In original condition with visible wear, including heavy patina consistent with their age and use. Sold as a set of 4. Mart Stam (1899-1986) architect, designer, teacher. Stam was known as an energetic and forceful designer who was intensely committed to new urban development and functionality. In 1927 he built homes for the famous Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart and designed the prototype of the cantilevered tubular chair. Stam also taught at the Bauhaus (1928-29). In his writings, which often have a militant tone, Stam consistently emphasizes the need to put the human and humanistic side of design first.
