Max Ernst Cast Bronze Sculpture

Max Ernst, world renown Post-War German surrealist artist in his own right, created this bronze, which provenance shows used to have a signed base in an edition of 30. A rattling inside of the cast bronze mask indicates that the bottom portion was cut off and remounted to a smaller version of the original stone base. Since then, the previous owner has ground part of the back of the original piece and engraved 'Picasso #24/30'. Quite a story!
