African initiation helmet mask and sculpture is a Mende Sowei (or Bundu) ritual mask from Sierra Leone. It is used in initiation rites for young women by the Sande society. The mask symbolizes ideals of feminine beauty, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. It is traditionally worn on top of the head with raffia covering the face. Wear is consistent with age and use.
